Following launches across Asia earlier this year, Kawasaki has confirmed that the faired Ninja 250SL and naked Z250SL are coming to Europe. At first glance both bikes, which are pretty much identical apart from their different bodywork and handlebars, might appear to be too similar to the Ninja 300 and Z300.
There are some significant distinctions though, because the newcomers are intended to appeal more to novice riders or those who simply want a motorcycle that’s cheaper to run. For instance, whereas the 300 pair shares a twin-cylinder engine, the Ninja 250SL and Z250SL feature a 249 cc single-cylinder motor. It’s installed in a compact steel trellis frame and produces 27 bhp (20 kW / 28 PS).
That output puts Kawasaki’s models on a par with the Suzuki Inazuma 250 and Honda CBR300R, two rivals in what is a market segment devoid of many contenders.
The Ninja 250SL has a wet weight of 152 kg (335 lbs) with anti-lock brakes fitted, while the Z250SL tips the scales at just 150kg (330 lbs). Such lightness should be a major selling point, especially for learners.
Kawasaki has yet to announce UK prices.
