A quick glance at the ZH2 is enough to realise that this is a very heavily modified Colorado. Intended for military use, special features include a longer chassis, bespoke bodywork, off-road suspension and bigger tyres. However, the most significant change isn't immediately apparent: instead of an internal combustion engine, the ZH2 runs on electricity which is generated by an on-board hydrogen fuel cell.
Virtually silent running, instant torque and a reduced thermal signature are among the technology's advantages. Furthermore, the ZH2 is equipped with a portable 25 kW electric power take-off unit.
As in the civilian world, access to a reliable supply of hydrogen is likely to be a potential impediment. Doubtless the U.S. Army will carefully consider that issue when it begins assessing the ZH2 next year.
